Battery Lesson

Postby aunt betty » Tue Dec 29, 2015 9:43 am

Got one today.
Should have already known this stuff but since I learned something today I figure it would be nice to share.

A fully charged battery will not freeze until it is -76F. (wow)
A fully discharged battery can freeze at 32F (d'oh)

I think I wasted a good battery by leaving my GPS unit and a couple car chargers hooked up all the time. It ran the battery down enough to where it froze and that does shit to the wiring inside. (think I lost a cell)

The battery charges and the machine says it's fully charged but my charger kept wanting to push 6 amps thru it.
That was a signal to me...
The battery was fully charged, had 12.79 volts, yet tested BAD at autostoned.

I think the lesson is to unplug the phone chargers and GPS power supply when you are not driving daily and it's winter.

Got a 65 series battery for $48 somethin at Walmart and am back in business

Because flooded lead acid batteries at full discharge are full of mostly just water due to the sulfuric acid mix H2SO4 losing it's sulfate atoms and turns into regular H2O. When you re-charge it you send those atoms back to the negative plate and back into sulfuric acid.

Good news is that if the battery was discharged enough to freeze it was probably already toast and you needed a new one anyway.

Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.” ― Samuel Adams

Have had incredible good luck about having stuff break in the driveway.
Last year was different. Had two flats at once after buying a new tire. Saying a new tire was toast two days after installing it. Not repairable... Had three flats in a period of like 7-10 days.

This year my boat blew the head gasket in the driveway and some other little minor stuff but it keeps happening in my driveway so I'm good with that.

Put a battery tender on your boat.
I have 4 batteries in my Hewescraft that I got with the boat and it is an '03.
But I keep an eye on the water level and as soon as I get home I plug in the on board chargers and it stays on 24/7 365.

Interesting...on board battery charger in boat prevents truck battery from going bad. I'll try that.

You assumed. BAM!

Probably a good assumption in a duck boat forum. 50/50

Somehow when I quoted you...your insignificant babble fell off the wagon or something. :D
